My name is Perri Gorrara. Louis and I have lived on Denman Island for twenty two years. As far as I know, we aren’t newbies anymore. My reasons for running are as follows:
1. I am determined to “preserve and protect” our beloved island from being taken over by wealthy entrepreneurs who might like to turn it into a “resort island”.
2. I wish to encourage farming and food sharing on our island. The more food we can grow, share and/or sell on Denman, the more independent we can be and given what is going on in the wider world these days, I believe that this is very important.
Many islanders will know that I volunteer with The Food Bank, The Free Store, The Denman Museum and help out at events like our marvellous Blackberry Faire. Many changes have occurred in the last few years. We used to have a population that was almost entirely white and older. Things have changed dramatically for the better. We now have a population brimming with young people, babies and kids of all ages, plus folks of every colour, ethnicity and gender orientation. It is a wonderful change that is great for our island in every way.
I spent more than thirty years in the Canadian and American Film Industries, working as a Production Designer. I do not have a bureaucratic bone in my body but I have worked with large and small budgets and large and small crews and have never gone over budget beyond 10 %, which I built into the budgets when I wrote them. Needless to say, I am committed 100% to getting the job done efficiently and effectively and, as I’ve said, “ Protecting our beloved island” at all costs.
