Hello Denman,
My name is Noah Ross, and I am running to serve as a Denman Island Trustee in the October 17 election.
My partner Jenny and I have lived on Denman for six years, and we feel very fortunate to be raising our daughter here. We love this island: its natural beauty, local food, arts and culture, extraordinary volunteerism, and the friendliness and community spirit that make Denman such a distinctive place.
If elected, I would see my job first and foremost as representing Denman residents: listening carefully, being accessible, explaining decisions clearly, and working respectfully together even when we disagree.
My professional background would be useful with this. I am an experienced lawyer in civil litigation, public interest and environmental matters. My work involves reading and interpreting legislation, advocating for clients, negotiating disputes, and working with governments, community organizations and corporations.
Housing affordability is an important part of a sustainable community. So is a viable local economy. Farming, trades, arts, small businesses and other appropriate economic activities allow people of different ages, occupations and incomes to remain on Denman and so must be fostered. I would explore how the Trust can work with the CVRD, the Province and other governments on supporting economic activities and affordable housing while carrying out the
Trust’s responsibility to preserve and protect the unique environment and character of the Island.
There are also some specific questions I would like our community and the next Local Trust Committee to explore if there is community interest. One is whether the Trust, CVRD and Ministry of Transportation can work together on a more coordinated approach to planning and infrastructure around downtown Denman so we can have community led development. Another is what role if any the Trust can play in protecting sensitive forests and ensuring that our aquifers and freshwater resources are not damaged by overuse.
