Why Re-elect Alex Allen for Island Trustee?
After conversations with community members, friends, and family, I have decided to run again as your Hornby Island Trustee. Why?
I wish to continue with our pending targeted OCP LUB Review on vacation rentals and housing which needs to be completed in the coming term. Vote for me so we continue to reach a consensus on what is best for our community and not one that divides.
This is a historical moment for Trust Council to look at their federal role, their advocacy, their relationship to the province, their mandate and their why. Vote for me so I can continue to question the status quo and bring Hornby Island issues to Council.
As local trustees, our job description is to preserve and protect the rural character and unique amenities on our islands. Hornby Island is a beautiful and very unique place. Which elements of Hornby Island’s rural character do we value most? On our islands, there is a growing need to reconcile urban lifestyles with preserving and protecting the rural character. I believe that we have the tools in our land use planning box to achieve both. We have our differences, but we all play a role in determining our future.
Instead of relying on crisis management, we need to be proactive and address the challenges we face now, not when it’s too late. As Randall Arendt said, we need “to grow gracefully, in a manner consistent with the traditional character of the community, so that new development fits harmoniously in the town fabric and helps to reinforce the local sense of place.”
Beyond addressing the OCP LUB Review and applications as they arise, if re-elected, I hope to:
• Work with community members and businesses, in creating a development pattern for the future of “downtown” Hornby. What do we want the Four Corners to look like? What commercial or mixed-use
opportunities exist?
• Explore the Ford Cove Marina development plan, which has been on the LTC back burner for well over 20 years. What is our vision? What can we do incrementally?
• Partner with community groups and members in community initiatives, like creating affordable housing outside the box. It’s about neighbourhoods not just buildings; it’s about human habitats where people want to live.
And finally, if re-elected I promise to bring your concerns to the regional district, the province, the RCMP, Emcon, BC Ferries, BC Highways, BC Hydro and opossums.
I ask for your support October 17 and would be honoured to serve as your Hornby Island Trustee.
