Petition to the B.C. Ombudsperson to Investigate the B.C. Ferry Commissioner
We, the residents of Denman and Hornby Islands, urge the B.C. Ombudsperson to investigate the B.C. Ferry Commissioner for the following breaches of her mandate that is encoded in the Coastal Ferry Act. Specifically, the Commissioner has yet 1) to resolve islander's eight years of complaints that the Baynes Sound Connector cable ferry is unreliable because of unresolved mechanical failures and excessive service cancellations; 2) to hold B.C. Ferries Accountable for underreporting service cancellations and for accepting B.C. Ferries’ claim, despite a preponderance of contradictory evidence, that the cable ferry has exceeded corporate expectations by saving tax money on fuel and staff; 3) to compel BCF to involve residents and the Denman Island Ferry Advisory Committee in cable ferry decision-making beyond the gathering and reporting stage of the community engagement policy; 4) to balance the needs of ALL stakeholders.
