Dinosaur Bone Found on Denman Island

Paleontologists have identified a dinosaur tail vertebra from Denman Island as belonging to an Ornithomimosaur. Originally discovered in 1999 in Denman’s marine sediments, the bone’s identity was only confirmed as an Ornithomimosaur in April of this year, at least 75 million years old (late Cretaceous Period), and as the first confirmed discovery of this species in Canada.
This bird-like bi-ped, believed to be feathered, was the fastest running dinosaur of its time, and was an omnivore. These agile theropods with long legs and necks, slender bodies, toothless beaks, and small heads, resembled modern ostriches. This bone likely arrived here as part of a floating carcass before settling into the marine mud.
