Ellen Louise Bell

Ellen Louise Bell

May 5, 1935 – June 17, 2021

Louise died peacefully at her beloved home, with a daughter on each side, her cat Roo sleeping beside her and surrounded by the love that is Denman Island. She had a vibrant joy of living, was a powerhouse of energy and productivity and above all loved a challenging project!

Louise grew up in Toronto and at Camp Tanamakoon developed a love for the outdoors. She enjoyed summers at Georgian Bay with her 4 young children. When she moved to the west coast in 1989 the Denman Island community became her second family. Louise enjoyed looking for trilliums in the woods of Ontario, finding shells on Denman Beaches and having a glass of wine with friends on her patio.

In her incredible organized fashion, Louise carefully documented all instructions for the end of her life. We want to thank all the people that have shown love and support for making her wishes come true including being on Denman for the last few days of her life; having a small gathering at the green burial with flowers from Denman; sharing a few words and stories. Only Louise would gather a group of people together to build a cemetery, in a conservation area, so that she could be buried in nature without harming the planet.

As written by Louise, “I’m so happy to be on Denman as I’ve experienced “community” as never before.” Louise is loved and memories of her will linger in all our hearts.

There will be a Celebration of Life when travel restrictions allow.
