Ruth Fortune
(June 13, 1927 – May 17, 2021)
Born in Moose Jaw, Ruth then came out to the West Coast where she met Robert in radio broadcasting. They had 2 kids, Mark & Elisa, and had a busy, bustling life near Horseshoe Bay. Besides being a working mother with a publishing firm & organizing runway fashion shows for the Hudson’s Bay Company, she always found time to canvas for the Heart & Stoke Foundation, volunteer with special needs kids at school as well as getting her own children to the Vancouver Rowing club for 5:30am practices. She gave a lot – selflessly. She and Robert retired to Hornby Island in 1993. Ruth soon became an integral part of the “Free Store” @ the Hornby Recycling Depot. She was a force to be reckoned with. Sharp as a tack, such integrity & so kind hearted. She felt embraced by this community which was a real gift when Robert passed. Ruth was determined to live on Hornby till her last breath – which she managed to execute with finesse.
Her infectious laugh and lovely smile will be missed. She is survived by Mark, Abby, Megan & William, as well as Elisa, Roy, Jasper & Geordie.
